California trip recap 9: San Francisco

We left Monterey in the morning on Wednesday and started the 2 hour drive to San Francisco. We made really good time and headed straight into the city across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge towards Sausalito

It was beautiful; we could see across the bay to get a great view of the skyline and the Bay Bridge.

We headed towards Muir Woods to see some redwoods, but when we got there, there was no parking available and we didn’t feel like waiting around to wait for people to leave so the sign is about as close as we got!

We decided to turn around and head to our hotel. We stayed at another beautiful Intercontinental hotel.

Our time in San Francisco can pretty much be summed up in two words: shopping and eating

Hello, shopping!

We were staying near the Union Square district in the city and it is where all of the shopping is. There was a huge Macy’s and Nordstrom just blocks away. Also the largest Old Navy in the world was only 2 blocks from our hotel. For those of you that know about my love affair with Old Navy, you can imagine how much this excited me! I even took my picture in front of it! Yes, I know I'm a dork!

It was Nordstrom’s annual anniversary sale so I definitely wanted to check it out. I got some great finds for fall. My favorites are this beautiful purple leather jacket and a super cute Kate Spade handbag.

We didn't really have any set plans for what we wanted to or where we wanted to eat in San Francisco. We went online and looked for a close place that was loved by locals. We found a place called Pazzia and I am so glad we did. Being from Chicago, its hard to find good pizza just anywhere, but I can say with certainty that this was the best thin crust pizza I have ever had! It was just a quaint little place with about 15 tables but the food was amazing! The owner is from Italy and has a restaurant there as well. They have a simple menu of mostly pastas and pizzas. As soon as we saw other people eating the pizza, we knew what we were getting!

Michael started with a yummy Italian beer

We ordered bruschetta for an appetizer and it was incredible

Oh and they have homemade gelato which was heaven in a dish! This was pistachio gelato and OMG it was insanely good.

This meal was just so good. Yes it's just pizza and it seems really simple, but sometimes simple is sublime. Everything was so fresh and made with such care. This was honestly one of our favorite meals our entire vacation. We loved it so much we went back our last night in San Francisco and ordered the exact same thing. We're still talking about that pizza!!

Our second day in San Francisco was our last day with our rental car. So we decided to go back to the Golden Gate Bridge to take some more pictures. Of course it wasn't clear and sunny like the previous day but we still got some cool shots.

They had this cool display of one of they cables sliced in half so you could see what it looked like. In each cable there are over 27,000 wires packed together to give the cable stability and flexibility. It's amazing!

After our second visit to the Golden Gate bridge, we had until noon before we had to return the car. Michael really wanted to drive down Lombard Street so we headed back into the city to drive down the crookedest street. We were lucky that because it was early it wasn't too crowded. I still couldn't get over how steep the hills were!

Hill we had to drive up to get to Lombard Street, it was pretty steep.

Starting to head down Lombard Street

Being at the top gave you a great view all the way down to the bay

When we got to the bottom, I got out of the car and took some pictures looking up Lombard Street

It's pretty steep, it's also really beautiful. Just look at all of those hydrangeas!

After driving down Lombard Street, we headed to the rental car place to start the 2 hour process there. It was a pain, but oh well! After returning our car we headed to lunch. We went to Tom Colicchio's Wichcraft. He is the head judge on Top Chef. We had some delicious sandwiches. I had probably the best BLT I've ever had.

Yum!

After lunch, we did some shopping and headed back to the hotel to go for a swim and just relax for a while. We found a great sushi place for dinner and enjoyed some yummy fresh seafood.

On our last full day in San Francisco we headed to Fisherman's Wharf.

Entering Fisherman's Wharf

When we got out of the cab we saw this crab (above) which makes sense since it's the Fisherman's Wharf and then we turned around and we saw this (below)

Hmmm...giant macaroni noodle at Fisherman's Wharf?!!

Don't mind the girl humping the giant noodle in the background. She clearly didn't read the sign in front of the giant noodle.

HA!

After the big noodle, we moved on. We started at the famous Pier 39 and walked through to see the seals.

They were very cute, but very loud!

Fishing boats in the harbor

All around San Francisco we saw these little "Go Cars". They were self guided tours throughout the city. The three-wheeled cars were so tiny, there is no way in heck I would have taken one of those things, especially with the hills!

Ghirardelli Square!

Ah...the chocolate shop

We of course picked up a few things!

After our walk down all the piers we found a great place for lunch right on the harbor. We got a great table right by the window and had a delicious lunch.

I loved all the colorful fishing boats

After spending the day at the Wharf, we headed back to the hotel to relax for a bit and then go to dinner. We headed back to Pazzia for another delicious dinner. It was the perfect ending to our time in San Francisco. We unfortunately had to get up early the next day to catch our flight home. Our California Adventure was over, but we had a fabulous time!
