What I'm reading...

The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, Ree Drumond

Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman, is a woman of many talents. Her website showcases her recipes, ability to homeschool her children, and her photography. Now Drummond has written and published her first memoir about her romance with and marriage to Marlboro Man. I already knew the general outline of their love story: Ree, on a brief interlude home before moving to Chicago, meets Marlboro Man on a night out. Although she is attracted to him, she only plans to be home for a short time anyway. A few months pass before Marlboro Man calls her, and the two have their first date. And their second. And their third. Marlboro Man and Pioneer Woman (although at this point she was more of a City Slicker) have a whirlwind courtship, with Marlboro Man playing the part of Prince Charming ever so well. I loved reading this book and laughed out loud at Ree's many embarassments early in their relationship - how she managed to get lost on her way home from a date at Marlboro Man's house, how she put her car in the ditch while driving her future mother-in-law during their first meeting - I could totally see these things happening to me! This is a book I devoured, started one evening on the train and read the next morning.

The Baby Trail, Sinead Moriarty

Being on the baby trail myself, this book was a must read. I really loved the approach of this book, a humorous look at the seriously depressing subject of infertility. I could personally identify with almost all the stuff Emma was going through. It really puts into view what its like to go through fertility issues and how they can make you feel, and even how the innocent comments and attention from others can quickly be misconstrued as something mean-spirited and malicious. I laughed and cried with Emma as she dealt with social issues, went through the multiple `mildly uncomfortable' medical procedures, undertook pilgrimages and saw her friends get pregnant incessantly! If you have been through this, you know exactly what Emma's life is like. For me personally it was very helpful to step back and look at this situation from another perspective, and the humor gave a much-needed release to plenty of pent up frustrations! For non-fertility challenged women, this book may seem unnecessary, weird and whiny. But for all the women populating the millions of infertility bulletin boards out there, this is a must read. You will totally identify with the trials and tribulations of the process and get some much-needed laughs.

The Right Fit, Sinead Moriarty

In Sinead Moriarty's follow up to 'The Baby Trail,' Emma and James, a couple who have tried for years to have a baby with no success have decided to adopt. Going the international route they decide to adopt a Russian child, but deciding on what country to adopt from is the easiest part of this process! Emma and James go through extensive background checks, parenting classes and a wait list the size of Russia itself all to get the child that they have dreamed about but will this child be the right fit for Emma and James? I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Baby Trail' because Moriarty's depiction of a woman struggling to get pregnant seemed very truthful and there were no easy answers at the end. In 'The Right Fit' however, the same determination that Emma had to conceive a child in 'The Baby Trail' seemed a bit over the top in 'The Right Fit' and the ending seemed a little too neat and predictable for my taste. However, the secondary characters are just as lovable and the story of Emma's best friend Lucy and new boyfriend Donal is once again a real treat. Can't wait to read the third book in this series 'From Here to Maternity'!

Last Night at Chateau Marmont, Lauren Weisberger

I couldn't put this down! I really loved Devil Wears Prada, but then Weisberger's next two books were just ok. I was thrilled that Last Night at Chateau Marmont turned out to be so entertaining. I really enjoyed the characters and felt that Weisberger captured the dynamic between married people having problems really well. At times, it was so sad. I really rooted for Brooke! Plus, I am an avid reader of the weekly celebrity magazines and this book gave me insight into what celebrities caught in a "scandal" might be feeling.
