Welcome to the world Baby Lily Marie!

Baby Lily made her arrival on Friday, 3 weeks early. It certainly wasn't according to plan but everything worked out fine and she and her Mama are doing great. She is beautiful and looks just like Arla. She was born at 11:52 pm and was 7 pounds, 11 ounces and 19.5 inches long. We all headed to the hospital as soon as we found out Arla needed a c-section. We spent several hours in the visitors room waiting.

Waiting is hard when someone you love is having surgery.

But then finally at almost 1 am, we got the text we had been waiting for, a smiling Arla and Baby Lily!

Grandma was very relieved and excited and emotional of course!

We were all so relieved and now we just had to wait some more until we could see her. We had to wait another hour and a half before we were allowed to go in one at a time to go to the recovery room to see Arla and Lily. She was just beautiful and looked just like her Mama. I didn't take my camera back with me to recovery because I wanted to hold my niece. She was perfect and slept in my arms. I was so happy she was  finally here and that everything was okay.

Since we only got a quick visit since Arla was still in recovery from having a c-section, we went back on Saturday afternoon to spend some more time with the new family.

Welcome to the world little Lily Marie, we can't wait to watch you grow!

Baby Dworianyn Bump Watch: 10 weeks

How far along? 10 weeks, 3 days - no bump yet
Size of the baby? A prune, 1.5 inches long
Maternity clothes? Not yet, I think it will be a while since all my pants are loose. I have started buying a few shirts to wear in a couple of months.
Weight gain? I've been losing ever since I've gotten pregnant. This kid is eating me out of house and home! I'm down 19 pounds so far.
Gender? We will hopefully be finding out on November 23. Most people are saying girl but there are a few in the boy camp as well. We just want a healthy baby.
Movement? I'm going to have to wait several more weeks for this, but I can't wait!
Sleep? I've been sleeping pretty well except that I have to get up 3 or 4 times a night to go to the bathroom.
Food Cravings? There aren't really things I'm craving lately, at first I just wanted turkey sandwiches 24/7, but I do have food aversions to certain things. I am definitely hungry all the time though. I eat every few hours and yet I keep losing weight!
What I miss? My energy and my memory.
Symptoms? Feeling tired and very hungry. I'm also feeling really dumb, I forget everything! Pregnancy brain is real people.
Best moment of the week? Finally revealing our secret to the rest of our family and friends. It's been so hard to keep it to ourselves. My other favorite moment this week was seeing our little tater tot Wednesday at our 10 week ultrasound. I love anytime I get to see him/her especially since our ultrasounds are going to be decreasing now that I've been released from my IVF clinic.

Hoping: We can relax this weekend, we need it after last weekend and the week we've had.
Reading: The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy
Watching: Our little baby move around at our ultrasound on yesterday.
Listening to: Lots of congratulatory messages from our family, it was so nice!
Looking forward to: Celebrating birthdays with my family this weekend.
Hearing buzz about: A keyboardless keyboard? Cool!

Our IVF Journey, Part Two

If you're still with me after part one, now we're getting to the good stuff!

Monday, August 29 - Well I did something that I said I wouldn't do, at 9 days post transfer, I took a pregnancy test. I originally didn't want to take one because if it was negative, I would be super bummed and if it was positive but then not confirmed with the blood test, I would be devastated. I don't know why but I just felt like I needed to take one today so I did. I took the test and I couldn't bear to watch so I left it in the bathroom and I went around and gathered up laundry to put a load in just to keep myself busy for a minute or two. Finally it was judgement time and I went back into the bathroom to look. I was so nervous and expecting to see "Not Pregnant" appear on the screen like the hundred ones I've taken before. Except this time it didn't, it said:

I just stood there in disbelief and immediately cried immense tears of joy. It was the moment I have been waiting almost 2 years for. I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't wait to tell Michael. I tried calling him at work to see if he was going to come home for lunch, which he often does when I work from home, but of course he said he wasn't. I couldn't take it. I got in the car and drove over to his parent's house where he works and walked in and said, "You're going to be a Daddy!" He just kind of looked at me and then said, "I thought you weren't going to test!" I told him something just told me to do it and I was glad I did, we were both so excited and crying tears of joy. This makes me feel so much better about my blood test on Friday. I just pray that everything is okay and developing how it should. It's so early, so many things can go wrong. I have a gut feeling like it's our time though, and everything is going to be ok.

Tuesday, August 30 - Thursday, September 1 - I have taken multiple pregnancy tests every day since Monday and they all still confirm pregnant. I'm trying not to get too excited, but I'm finding it hard to contain myself! I've been very hungry and pretty sleepy. I'm also down 7 pounds, so apparently my body is working hard doing something! The digital ones disappear after 24 hours so that's why they are blank. And yes, that is a lot of tests, about $80 worth, but I was so excited! I needed to see a positive test every day leading up to the blood test.

Friday, September 2 - Well it's the day we've been waiting for. I was sick to my stomach all day from the anxiety. I felt pretty good since all the home pregnancy tests said positive, but I felt like it had to be confirmed by the doctor in order to get really excited. It was a rough test day, it took 7 sticks to get my blood, but I wasn't leaving there until they had it. I had to know if I was pregnant or not!

We finally got the call around 4:00 pm. We got the news we've been waiting almost 2 years for, I'm officially pregnant! My hcg beta was 77, which is perfect! I have to go back to have another blood test on Wednesday and Friday next week and then I'll have my first ultrasound the week after that. We are so overjoyed. Our parents and siblings were waiting with anticipation all day too since they knew the news was coming today. We called my parents and Michael's parents first to tell them the good news. They were so excited! Next was Arla and Teddy. Then we headed over to Rich and Tif's to have dinner and to deliver the news that Jacob was finally getting a cousin!

We went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner and we had a 30 minute wait so we did some shopping. I might have just had to pick up one thing for the baby. I couldn't resist, I've never been able to buy baby things for myself before! I picked up a really cute sleeper set.

We had so much fun all weekend long celebrating with our parents and siblings. This has honestly been one of the best weekends of our lives! It's going to be so hard to keep this a secret for the next 6 weeks or so, I'm just bursting!

Tuesday, September 6 - Today I had my second beta test to make sure that my hcg level is going up and that the baby is still developing. The blood draw wasn't too fun, 5 sticks, but whatever it took to get my blood. I was so nervous all day to get the phone call. I was just so worried the number would drop or not rise to the level it needed. Well apparently I shouldn't have been so worried because my hcg beta was 377! Everything seems to be progressing as it should. I have another beta on Friday and our first ultrasound on Monday, I can't wait to see our little baby!

Friday, September 9 - Today I had another beta test. This was the last hurdle before we get to have our first ultrasound. My beta came back at 1331, up from 377! Everything is looking great and we will get to have our first ultrasound on Monday, I can't wait! We are just so excited and feel so blessed that everything is going according to plan.

Monday, September 12 - Today I had my last beta, you have to do them until your hcg is 1500. I was just shy on Friday but they still had to do it to make sure. It was a pretty easy blood test this time around, only 3 sticks. Definitely better than average. We also had our first ultrasound. We couldn't really see anything since the baby is the size of a sesame seed, just the sac where the baby is rapidly developing. We could see only one sac so it looks like only one embryo took. The nurse said everything looked perfect. The embryo implanted in the right spot and everything was measuring as it should. I will be 6 weeks on Wednesday. We get to go back on Monday for another ultrasound where we should actually be able to see something and possibly a heartbeat! The little black circle below is the embryo sac that the baby is developing in.

Wednesday, September 14: I am 6 weeks pregnant today. Our little baby has gone from a poppyseed to a small pea. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal but our baby is growing at a rapid rate. I can't wait to see our little tater tot on Monday at our ultrasound. I really hope we get to see the heartbeat!

Monday, September 19: Today we had another ultrasound to get another look at our little tater tot. I must say it was really nice going to the doctor and not having to get a blood test! I was pretty nervous, but my fears were put to rest when I finally got to see our tiny little baby on the screen. We also got to see the tiny heart beating! It was beating nice and strong at 112 bpm. We were so excited. I know it doesn't look like much but that's our little baby in there! Next Wednesday I will be having my first official OB appointment!

Wednesday, September 21: Today I am 7 weeks pregnant. Our little baby is busy growing from the size of a pea to a blueberry! I can't wait to see our little bug next week. I have been so hungry this week and I feel like I've been eating non-stop but I'm losing weight in the process! I'm down another 4 pounds.

Wednesday, September 28: Today I am 8 weeks pregnant and our baby is growing from the size of a blueberry to a raspberry. I had my first official OB appointment. This is the point most "normal" women would go to the doctor. I had to have a lot of blood taken, an ultrasound and a consultation with the head nurse about pregnancy. They couldn't get my blood. They poked me 5 times and decided they could wait until next time to do my first trimester blood work. I have bruises to show for it though!

Next was my favorite part, the ultrasound! We got to see our little tater tot and everything looked great. I'm measuring right at 8 weeks and the heart beat was a strong 167! They couldn't get a very good picture because he/she was being a diva and moving around but you can see the outline of the baby even though its fuzzy. The heart beat is on the left side of the picture.

After the ultrasound we met with the head nurse to talk about next steps and when I'll be released to my regular OB. I have only one more appointment in 2 weeks and then I will graduate from the IVF clinic and proceed like a normal pregnant lady!

Friday, September 30: Today I met with my regular OB for an introductory pregnancy appointment and to catch him up with everything that has gone on the past couple of months. When he told us we needed to do IVF in May he told me before I left, "I'll see you in September pregnant with twins!" Well he called it and he was half right! He was so excited for us since he had seen everything I had gone through prior with many failed months of clomid cycles.

Wednesday, October 5: Today I am 9 weeks pregnant! The baby is a size of a green olive this week. It feels like the weeks are flying so far, I am really surprised. I am going to start taking belly pictures next week so we will have something to compare it to in the coming weeks/months.

Sunday, October 9: Today we spilled the beans to the rest of our family. I sent everyone an e-mail with our pictures spelling out, "We are pregnant FINALLY!" I also wore a cute Halloween shirt I made with a little baby skeleton on my belly. It feels so good to have our secret out in the open now!

Wednesday, October 12: Today I am 10 weeks pregnant! The baby is the size of a prune this week. I had my final appointment at my IVF clinic. I had a blood test and an ultrasound. The blood test didn't go well so they stopped and I'm going to another lab to get my draws. I only got stuck twice so it wasn't too bad. My favorite part is always the ultrasound! We got to see our little tater tot and it was amazing. We could see him/her moving around and see the little arms and legs. It's just amazing how quickly it has gone from looking like a tadpole to a baby. The heart rate was perfect at 183. I got the final blessing from my nurses and I am officially released from the IVF clinic. I get to be a normal pregnant lady now!

So that's our story of how we made our baby. It's obviously not a traditional route, but it's what worked for us. We are just so thankful that this is even possible for us. 30 years ago we wouldn't have been so lucky. Life is full of tests and I truly believe this has been one of mine. I've learned a lot going through this process, the biggest lesson being patience. It has never been my strong suit. I've also learned that a positive attitude really does make a difference. I honestly think that because I felt this would work from the very beginning, it helped. Every nurse at my clinic has told me that they wish all of their patients had the same attitude. Even when I was getting stuck 5, 7, or 9 times for a blood test every other day, I did it with a smile and realized it was all for a good cause. I've learned that I'm capable of more than I give myself credit for. I've always been a baby when it came to doctors, shots, etc. I blame it on being extremely healthy and never getting sick and needing to go to the doctor. Because of this process I went from almost having a panic attack anytime I have ever needed a shot or blood test, to shooting myself in the stomach with a needle like it was no big deal. It really is amazing what you are able to overcome when you want something so bad, you don't care what it takes.

I've also learned that I have the best husband and family in the world. Our parents and brothers and sisters have been along this journey with us from day 1. They've known every detail and know more about my uterus, ovaries, eggs and Michael's sperm then they probably care to, but they've always listened and been so supportive. I can't even begin to explain how wonderful Michael has been through this process. He has been at every appointment, every blood test and ultrasound. He has lifted me up on days when I wasn't feeling so positive and has told me from the very beginning that this would work. This process has actually brought us closer together. He is my partner in every sense of the word and I'm so happy that our dream has come true and that we are going to be parents.

Our IVF Journey, Part One

After our big announcement yesterday, I thought I would let you all in on how we got here. It wasn't as easy as it is for most. We've been on a 2 year journey to get to this point. After a failed year on our own, and 6 failed months on fertility drugs we arrived at IVF as our solution. Today and tomorrow I'm going to share our IVF process. I decided to keep track of my entire process so that I could look back one day and remember what I was going through at the time. This post is extremely long and I really don't expect anyone to read it, but keeping this journal really helped me keep up with everything that was happening. I also thought someone going through what we went through might benefit from hearing our story. I started writing this post in early June.

Our IVF Journey, Part One
So, I have to come clean. We've been keeping a secret that only a handful of people know. We've been going through the IVF process. We told our parents and siblings but decided to leave it at that. I don't really know why since I've been so open about everything else I've gone through, but something just told me to keep it quiet. It's a long and very intense process and I just felt the less people who knew, the better. I needed to keep my stress low and fielding questions from 20 or 30 people would not allow me to be stress free.

Back in May after 6 failed cycles on Clomid (a fertility drug), I had an HSG test. We found out that I had a blocked fillopian tube on my left side. I already had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome so with that, plus the blocked tube, my doctor recommended that we start down the path to in vitro fertilaztion (IVF). I was pretty devastated at first. I had it set in my mind that we wouldn't ever get to that point and I was not mentally ready for it. After a day of feeling sorry for myself, talking about it at length, and crying until my eyes were puffy; I became more determined than ever.

Michael and I talked about it over and over and over again. He told me that he would support any decision I made and that if I didn't want to go through with it and explore adoption or stop trying altogether, he was fine with it. But, I'm not a quitter, and I never wanted to give up. I started researching IVF like crazy to get a better idea of what it involved, what our chances were, how much it would cost, etc. My OB recommended an IVF specialist for us to meet with and we were lucky to get in for a consultation the next week. On Wednesday, June 8 after meeting with several professionals at the IVF office and talking through all of our available options, we made the decision to move forward with IVF.

After our initial consultation, they sent me home with about 25 books, pamphlets and CD's to review. I read every single thing front to back twice. I wanted to educate myself on the entire process so I would know what to expect all along the way. After reading everything, I started to feel excited more than scared. I just had a good feeling that this is what we needed to do to get our family started and that it was going to work.

A week later on June 14, we went back to our IVF office for a training class on the entire process, timeline, how to give injections and we both had to get a blood test. It was pretty funny because I taught one of the nurses how to give one of the injections because I watched one of the CD's they gave me and she was telling me how to do it wrong. She couldn't believe I had actually watched all the instructional videos and read everything they gave me. She said no one does that. Obviously she had never met me before! LOL

We found out that I would be in the August IVF group. They batch all of their patients together and the doctors only see that IVF group the entire week of the month. That way they can focus only on their IVF patients. The retrieval and transfer would be around the week of August 15 - 22. I really started to get excited. All I had to do was wait to get my period, get a blood test, and then they would put me on birth control to put me in a holding pattern until I was ready to start the injections for the retrieval. I didn't really want to wish Summer away, but I've never been so excited for Fall. I could be pregnant by Labor Day and that's all I could think about!

Here's how the next several weeks played out:

Thursday, June 16 - I got my period
Friday, June 17 - I went for a blood test - I got stuck 8 times in order to get my blood drawn, it was rough.
Sunday, June 19 - I started birth control to keep me in a holding pattern until early August.
Friday, June 24 - I got full medical clearance form my primary care doctor that I'm healthy and can start the IVF process.
The rest of June and July - Wait and wait and wait some more...I am enjoying all this time without doctors, needles and tests, I must say!
Friday, July 22 - I got all of my medications for my IVF cycle - it's getting pretty real about now seeing all those needles and drugs!

Friday, August 5 - I had my first blood test and ultrasound. My blood test didn't go very well. They stuck me 9 times and still couldn't get my blood. Luckily my ultrasound looked great so I was able to start taking my stimulant injections today. I have to inject myself every evening. I thought I would have a hard time stabbing myself in the stomach, but it was no big deal. It's amazing what you are able to overcome when you want something really bad.

Monday, August 8 - I went in for another blood test and ultrasound to see how I was progressing. We could see 8-10 follicles forming in my ovaries. They said I was progressing right on track. I had a much better experience getting my blood taken today. They got it on the second try. I was never so excited to see my blood flowing into a tube! I got a call later in the day to up my dosage, grow little eggs grow!

Wednesday, August 10 - I went in for yet another blood test and ultrasound to see how our little eggs were growing. They were able to find my blood again today, it took 5 tries, but at least they got it. Our eggs looked great. I had 6 large follicles and 12-15 smaller follicles still growing. My ovaries are really going to hurt in a few days as they get bigger. Overall, she said that everything looked perfect. I got another call later in the day to increase the dosage again to get the rest of those smaller eggs to catch up!

Friday, August 12 - It's blood test and ultrasound time again. I feel like all I've done is go to the doctor this week! Everything still looked great, lots of follicles growing. It looks like my retrieval will be Wednesday the 17th, but we will see how it all plays out. The best part was that I only got stuck once for my blood test, it was a good day!

Sunday, August 14 - Nothing says Sunday like a blood test and an ultrasound. I was hoping this would be my last time before my retrieval but unfortunately I have to go in Monday as well. It's okay though because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully I will have my retrieval on Wednesday but we'll see what happens. I'm ready to cross the finish line!

Monday, August 15 - Back to the doctor's office for yet another blood test and ultrasound. My veins have just about had it, but luckily the past few times they've gotten my blood on the first try. Everything looked good on my ultrasound and she told us that our retrieval would most likely be Wednesday or Thursday. It's very exciting that the end is in sight, let's hope it works! Tonight I got a call that my retrieval was officially scheduled. I am going in on Wednesday, August 17 at 11:45 with my retrieval at 1 pm. I also found out that Michael has to give me a HCG shot in the butt tonight. The timing is so precise it has to be given right at 2 am! That should be fun.

Tuesday, August 16 - Well we woke up at 1:50 am so we could wake ourselves up a bit before shooting me with a needle! I mixed up the HCG and Michael gave me my shot in the butt. It is a lot easier to give yourself the injections, I will say that. I was scared to death, but Michael is wonderful and did a great job. I barely felt anything. Unfortunately I couldn't go back to sleep so I was up the rest of the night.

Wednesday, August 17 - It's retrieval day! I have to admit I'm pretty happy to get these eggs out of me. I feel really bloated and my ovaries feel like they are going to burst. I just wish my surgery was earlier in the day. I can't eat or drink anything until after the retrieval, so about 2 pm this afternoon. It's going to be a long day. I woke up feeling good and wasn't nervous at all.

My motto for the day was, "Once you choose hope, anything's possible." I got ready, put on my Hope t-shirt and I was ready to go. We headed to the city to the surgery center around 11. We got there around 12, I checked in and we waited for a few minutes before they took me back to get ready. I changed clothes and they hooked up my IV. I was worried about the IV, since I've had so much trouble with the blood tests, but the nurse was fabulous and got it on the first try! I was ready to go, I just had to wait. Michael said I looked goofy, so he had to take my picture. He said I looked like a lunch lady in my hair net, HA!

We had to wait a couple of hours before I was finally brought back to the operating room. I remember going in, laying on the table, and getting strapped down. I was talking to all the nurses about my nail polish color when the anesthesiologist came in and put the sedative in my IV line. It was lights out about 6 seconds later!  I woke up in recovery a half hour later and I felt great. The nurses couldn't believe how alert I was. I begged for a glass of ice water and it was the best glass of water I've ever had! It had been so long since I had drank anything. Michael came back and told me he talked to the doctor and everything went great. I had very minimal pain and I was so happy I wasn't feeling nauseous or groggy. I stayed in recovery for about a half hour and then I was free to go. We headed home and I started calling and texting our parents, siblings and a few other people who knew what was going on. We came home and I had some chicken noodle soup. I felt fine, no nausea or cramping. I am so happy it's over, It wasn't bad at all. I am just so excited to have babies in me in either 3 or 5 days!

Thursday, August 18 - Today we got a call from the embryology lab for an update on the eggs taken yesterday at my retrieval. They retrieved 10 eggs, of those 10, 6 were mature. Out of the 6, 5 embryos were made successfully. We have 5 babies! I'm having a 3 day transfer so our babies will be put back in on Saturday. I am so excited, it's the closest I've ever been to being pregnant! I really hope our babies stick!

Saturday, August 20 - This is the day I have been waiting for for a long time. I got to have our babies put back inside of me so they can grow. We needed to be at the surgery center at 9:30 with my procedure being at 10:30. I was so excited, it was hard to believe that I was finally going to have a chance at being pregnant. When we got there I was taken back to change and have my vitals taken before the procedure. Everything looked good and then we just waited for my doctor to come in and give us an update on our embryos and help advise us on how many we wanted to insert. We still had 5 strong embryos. We had 3 - 8 cell embryos and 2 - 6 cell embryos. They were all rated the highest quality possible so they were nice and strong. It was a relief to know that we had good embryos. He showed us a picture of our top 3 - 8 cell embryos.

Not many people get to see their kids this early on! We decided to put 2 embryos in to give us the best shot. The possibility of twins was 20 - 25%. It was very exciting to see we had strong babies just waiting to return to their mama! We waited a few more minutes and then they came and got me to bring me into the operating room. The procedure only took about 10-15 minutes and was really easy. My doctor said everything went perfect. He showed me on the monitor where our babies were inserted and gave me a picture.

After the procedure, I was able to get dressed and head home. I had to stay off my feet and take it easy on Saturday and Sunday. I couldn't believe that I was leaving with babies inside me. We spent the ride home calling and texting our parents and siblings.

I really hope they stick and grow, grow, grow! It's nice to be done with this round of IVF. It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. If we don't get the desired outcome this time, I'm fully ready to turn around and do it all over again. We will know if I am pregnant on September 2. It seems like a long way away, but I know it will go fast. I have to go for a blood test this week as well.

Monday, August 22 - After two days of bed rest, I finally could get back to normal today. I started feeling some cramping today, but that is supposedly normal. I'm hoping it means the babies are growing! I'm hoping my blood test goes well on Wednesday and that my numbers are where they are supposed to be.

Wednesday, August 24 - Today I had to go in for a blood test to monitor my progesterone levels. I got stuck 5 times, which is never fun, but at least they did get my blood. I got a call this afternoon that all of my levels were where they should be so that was good news. I also got a call from the lab that our additional 3 embryos were put into cryo storage and they were all still great quality. It was a relief to know that we still have some embryos left if this cycle doesn't work. Now we just have to wait, wait and wait some more until September 2 to find out if 1 or both of these babies stuck.

Weekend Recap

We had a great, action-packed weekend. We went to Goebbert's pumpkin farm and we celebrated our 6th annual Oktoberfest. We went to the pumpkin farm with Rich, Tif, Jacob, Makayla and Tif's parents, Ray and Sandi. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. I took a ton of pictures as you can see below. Our Oktoberfest was a lot of fun. We didn't have a huge crowd this year so we actually got to sit and enjoy talking with everyone. I didn't take a lot of pictures though, only a couple. I say every year I'm going to take more, but I think I just get too tired and forget. I'll let the pictures tell the story of our weekend.

We had a lot of fun feeding the giraffes again this year.

They definitely get up close and personal!

 They love carrots!

Tif and Jacob fed the giraffes too

A full length shot.

Beautiful tigers

Some lazy kangaroos!

Tif and Jacob feeding the camel, he didn't like the carrots too much!

A mama pig and her little piglets

 Jacob modeling in the wildflowers.

Jacob finally was brave enough to feed an animal!

Just walking around, enjoying the day!

Makayla slept through most of the fun.

I want this one!

Or maybe this one.

Oooo, this one is nice too!

Family of four

Mimi and Grampster too!

Michael and I

I finally found the one!

Picking pumpkins and feeding animals is hard work!

6th annual Oktoberfest!

Makayla's first Oktoberfest!

Jacob loves cake pops!

Mmmm...

 Everyone talking and eating!

Today we went over to Rich and Tif's to watch football, hang out, play with the kids and eat Oktoberfest leftovers. We had fun just relaxing, we needed it! I got lots of Makayla time in, she was wearing her favorite shirt too! I wonder who bought her that? Maybe the Best Aunt Ever!

I hope all of you had a great weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather! Have a great week everyone!
